Choke Cocoi

Overtune: let’s make it more casual, I hate so-formal-interview so first question is why chokecocoi? any story behind the text?

chokecocoi:
There’s no serious meaning behind the band’s name. We’re having fun, we cant think of a decent band name.
Choke Cocoi was conceptualized after we met Tiyo Cocoi a tricycle driver from Intertown Homes Pagbilao.

Overtune: how did the band start? Because I seriously love the way you play your music, do you guys have common band/people influences?

chokecocoi:
It was in 1999 when Odessa and I (Tweety) planned of forming a band again (we’re bandmates back in highschool ------a long time ago, but not that long ago. hehe)
A friend introduced us to Qt and Joy (our ex-vocals), we started covering songs and then finally making our own. Year 2000 to early 2004 was a tough year, we’re on and off playing on shows. After the entire struggle we started looking for a new vocalist.
In late 2004, we met Sheryl since then the line-up didn’t change.

We’re all open to any kind of music, We’re a fan of punk bands, old and new school hc, L7, Babes in Toyland, Sonic Youth etc… when it comes to our own music we incorporate all our influences. We like fast and loud hc/punk tunes.

Overtune: who writes/compose/arranged for your piece?

chokecocoi:
all of us, but lyricwise, Sheryl contributes a lot when it comes to song writing. She has a notebook full of poetry.

Overtune: how long have you been playing in local UG shows?

chokecocoi:
It’s almost 9 years including the on and off period. Is it counted??

Overtune: it’s quite obvious I can’t translate your song into a more simple idea, what do you usually write or how do you compose your songs, do you focus more on political/social or just plain violence?

chokecocoi:
We write personal stuff, what we think, what we refuse, no violence. hehe! Our songs are as simple as its gonna get, you don't have to translate it. You might hurt your back. Hehe.

Overtune: your top 10 favorite local/international band at the moment?

chokecocoi:
Tweety: local: catalepsis, sauna, bystorm, play, all affected, mihara,
int: cold world, havexheart, champion, American nightmare.
Odessa: Locally, Mihara is fast becoming my favorite, play, bystorm, sangkay (waraycore)and Execution of Terror. Outside Phil., lately, Tragedy, Comeback Kid nothing new. I feel like I'm betraying my favorite bands whenever I am tempted to listen to new stuff. Hehe.

Overtune: do you guys stroke any side projects or anything?

chokecocoi: No side projects that I know of.

Overtune: I played in a band before and unfortunately it didn’t work out the way I expect it, its been pretty fuck like I was trying to pull out something you guys do (seriously) any words for bands/dudes or people who tries to be like chokecocoi? :P

chokecocoi:
Tweety: Be yourself and just keep on loving the music you grew up with.
Odessa: Things happen for a reason but if you really want something, you should be able to find a way to make it happen.Never forget who you are, don't live up on some expectations and always, always think for yourself. Most importantly, have fun!

Overtune: its been awesome knowing bands like you exist in local shows, Any last words?
chokecocoi:
Please support our local bands, organizers, local fanzines, labels, etc. They are the ones who are keeping this scene alive. And don't forget our neighbors from Malyasia and Singapore. Their bands are rad!
