Towards the End
OS: First, Why Towards The End? Howd u guys come up w/ a name?
Mel: First and foremost, good day to all the readers, this was my first time to be interviewed in a zine so don’t bother my silly answers lol. Well the the band before was named Fastest Kill ( it’s a cockfighting term), my father used to own a farm, then popped up my mind to name the band Fastest Kill haha it was crazy.. That first show we’d played was in San Pablo, we are totally nameless!! Then we decided to changed it up to Towards the End after our original drummer left and make a serious time with the band. We have a hard time picking up band names, Call to Arms, Hands on Stance to name a few, Peter suggested to us we named towards the end, i think its in a positive way naman, then we all agreed. I don’t know what does it suppose to mean but it sounds good. haha.. then we just get used to it.
OS: When and How did you guys start playing music?
Mel: Well, we were total strangers absolutely. Allan Dayco from Youth for a Cause Collective who is an active scenester in San Pablo has this idea of putting up a new active hardcore band in our area, since the San Pablo scene is lackin on active hc bands, then that’s where all started. Introduced us to one another. Started playing hardcore in shows the last thing I know we were releasing some materials lol, .. We’ve played also a couple of good shows, and made a lot of friends. But the other members were no-newbie in the scene. Our first drummer Odeng used to play drums in Fall Face First/Ludra, Peter then was a guitarist in Lipa’s Hardcore-outfit Strength from Within, As well as Carl(Condemned, Revolver), Emak also played bass in San Pablo’s short-lived hardcore outfit Waterpump, the second drummer, Friedrich/Sinangag, who is a sessionist drummer of San pablo’s Pathogen. He also got this Death metal band, Children of Badeth, that fuckin prick was always intoxicated while in the set hahaha I was just kidding.
OS: Can u tell us your music influences before you started a hardcore band?
Mel: We are all into hardcore ever since the band was formed. Except for Sinagag who was into metal stuff, but eventually, he was able to relate. We were always pushing him to listen hardcore, I guess that thing worked out. Peter, Mel as well as Carl, was into some hardcore/metal stuff like Hoods, Death Threat, Strength for a Reason, Point of No Return, Merauder etc. Emak was into old school straight edge hc bands bands like Warzone, Floorpunch, Black Flag, Better than a Thousand, to name a few.
OS: If you want to describe the band with just a few words to someone who has never heard about it, what would you say?
Mel: I think Guns Up! From Boston, they got some fucking talents!! Sad thing this guys just broke up.
OS: How long have u guys been playing in local UG shows?
Mel: We started rehearsing last November 2006,then a month ago was our debut show, Ung nagtour ung Myproof sa San Pablo, hehe we are a little bit fucked up that night, but the show was ok. Months later, our original drummer left and did his own thing(he was a sick drummer!!). The band was in silence in months. We were all busy that time I was still studying, all members had their work haha, Peter runs this Honeybee and furniture business, Emak was working in Manila, Carl was about to enter the medical school. After all the busy scheds, we still managed to put up the band together and decided to scout for a new drummer and take the band seriously, we decided to change the name to Towards the End and fortunately, we were able to play some couple of good shows with fellow Laguna hc bands like Mihara, Ground Zero, Piledriver, Eight Ounce. Isvarah, Magnum, Tame the Tikbalang, Bystorm etc from Manila. And also with some foreign acts like War All the time, Myproof, Magnicide, Magrudergrind and tonight with Driven Fear. Fortunately, this all thing worked out after all financial, some personal and schedule conflicts.
OS: Could you list top 5 in your playlist today (local/international)?
Mel: - Black Friday 29 – “The Escape”- Tame the Tikbalang – “Forever Shall Be”- Allegiance – “Overlooked”- Guns Up – “Outlive”- Strength for as Reason – “Shove and Prove”
OS: What are the feelings and reaction is your band and your lyrics supposed to suggest?
Mel: The lyrics were positively written, as simple as staying true to your friends and family, some personal matters, getting up their asses and start to make a difference in life and everything that has to do in improving one’s self??haha
OS: how do u guys work on your songs?
Mel: We tried to sound like some old school stuff but the ideas of members just got mixed up, Peter and Emak were always in charge in doing the riffs. We tried to put some beatdowns and some new school style, well I guess it all worked out. Mel and Emak were in charge in lyrics.
OS: Its great knowing Towards the End are active in local shows, any last words?
Mel: Thanks for the interview Sheng!! It a pleasure for having us here. To all hardcore enthusiast out there, just take it easy and have some fun!! Mosh it up, its a good exercise!! Thanks to all the bands we've played with!! BTW, Peter sends his regards, haha he completely lost your number lol. Watch out for our year-delayed EP release, this year......AGAIN! hehe.
OS: Youre welcome man, keep it up guys!
