Another interview with Francis Cycosis of Utterdismay, HC/Punk band from Manila and Bulacan. I met Francis long ago and I never thought that he would come up with a band like this and an electronica project. He will be contributing in our electro compilation too. Watch out for that mix.
So here goes..
Could you describe in brief what kind of people are involved in Utterdismay ?
“I am Francis. I do vocals for the band. I am also a bedroom composer music producer/director. Jego plays guitar for the band. He is a proud father also plays for the bands Arsonsmith, Magnum, No One Wins, latency has found me, and sometimes session for the neo crust band Killratio. He's currently studying in Don Bosco technical college. AJ also plays guitar for the band. He works for a company Nucom. He is the lead vocalist of the band No Peace in Silence, and also plays guitar for the band Wellfair. He is the founder of the Bulacan based independent record label/collective Painside records/collective. Ryan is our bassist, also plays for Omerta. They just finished their new album. Mark our drummer is one of the nicest person I’ve known and he also play drums for the band No One Wins. He's still studying and currently busy with his girlfriend hehehe. “
How you chose the band's name?
“We needed an outlet for all the struggles and personal issues that we've been through so in order to live free and happily, we sacrificed our boredom. it is not an easy sacrifice. "utterdismay" one word to make it look kvlt hahaha... anyway we named the band Utterdismay because we believe that the mark of ignorance is the depth of belief in injustice and tragedy. There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for us in its hands. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.”
How would you describe your music?
“We play hc/punk, our style is a bit unorthodox, heavy metal lead guitar solos, thrash metal riffs, NYHC breakdowns, thrashcore splatters, punk rock attitude..”
What kind of feelings and reaction is your band and your lyrics supposed to suggest?
“All of our lyrics are based on experience and from a few reference like for example illusion is about me loosing myself in the edge of insanity and was inspired by the book Illusions,The Adventure of the Reluctant Messiah every song is a reflection of who we are to form an image of pain, suffering and struggle so we could easily face our personal demons.”
What are your band influences?
“Risk-takers that are not afraid to take chance to show their creativity even if the style is unpopular or unorthodox. Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits, As friends Rust, Ignite, AFI, Reach the Sky, Avail, Quicksand, Agnostic Front, 25 ta life, Dead Ends, Biofeedback, Tame the Tikbalang, Mindrape,The Beauty of Doubt etc.”
Which tracks will you point out as your favorite ones and why?
“I would say Choose to Live. I wrote the song a few years back when I was so fuckin down and depressed and was about to commit suicide. The song is very special to me. It still gives me the chills every time I shout the line love gave me comfort, hate built my character, death made me stronger.”
How do u guys work on your songs? is it a team work?
“I write the lyrics, melody, and structure of the song, we arrange it then all else follows.”
If given the possibility to change something in the world what would it be?
“It would be for people to think for themselves to use their brain and not let others use it for them.”
