Kyte - Remix Works

Wow, It's been raining all week here. I miss the sun. I haven't updated this blog much.

Anyway, leaving you guys with an awesome music by Kyte from their new album Remix Works.  My favorite from the album is their collaboration with Au Revoir Simone and Feldberg, but the rest of the songs are still good. Kyte is an electronic indie pop group from England. Their early music was often labeled shoegaze/post rock but this time they have moved into more electro pop influenced sound.

The Radio Dept will be in Manila on April 20, 2011 in Hard Rock Cafe, Glorietta III Ayala Center Levels 3 & 4, Makati, Philippines with special guest Moscow Olympics. Yeah, you read that right.

I always wanted to watch Buzznight, unfavorably my schedule doesn't always work with it. Boohoo. Ever since I moved back in Batangas, I hardly get into some indie poppy flavor gigs.

I happen to see this event tagged in one of my Facebook friends this morning. It's good to know Populardays is playing again. Kicking off the night includes Soft Pillow Kisses, Slumbook, Don't Boggart the Can Man, Candyaudioline, Pinstriped Rebels, Tether, Haydeys and Populardays. This is going to be a night beyond of nostalgic affair, a night pure of indiepop, dreampop and shoegaze.

The show starts at 10pm in Sazi's Bar. Entrance fee is P100 inclusive of 1 free drink.

Apple Orchard is an indie pop band that started in Valenzuela City, Philippines now currently residing in California, USA. They've been part Overtune Project's indie pop collection 2 years ago.

Club 8 Live in Manila

I've been inlove with Club 8 ever since. Club 8 is a swedish indie pop band consisting Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergård (Acid House Kings). They have made 5 albums - Nouvelle (1996), The Friend I Once Had (1998), Club 8 (2001), Spring Came, Rain Fell (2002), Strangely Beautiful (2003) and The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming (2007). Their next album will be released in May 2010 "The People's Record" something that we all look forward to.
Amazingly, the band will be performing live in Manila on May 14, 2010 and Cebu on May 15.

Pop Melodies of Lazy Lorelei

Lazy Lorelei is another multi-talented indiepop band from Philippines, formed at September 2005. The band consists of Carl (bassist), Wallu (guitarist ), Pao (drummer ), Lourds a.k.a. Heeowa ( vocalist/guitarist ), and Cezeng (Guitarist/Drummer). Lazy Lorelei was inspired by Cocteau Twins songs, Lorelei and Lazy Calm. They were also inspired by the name of the vocalist of the local band Spring Boutique Lorelei with her lovely and soothing vocals in melodic pop tunes. Lazy Lorelei has a beautiful sounding as Lourds sings on her perfect pop voice.

Here’s a few questions we gave Lourds, read on guys!

Overtune: What do you hope to bring to the crowd when playing a show?

Lourds: We’re not sure. Not all people like what we play. Sometimes they are awestruck by the sound we make (but our music is not even rough to begin with, hmmpf...) especially when we’re included in a line-up of noisy and rough bands (yeah, it happen to us often). But there are two things we notice when our music has suddenly submerged into the unconscious minds of the audience; they began tapping their feet and bopping their heads to the songs we play.

Overtune: Would you mention at least 5 records in your playlist?

Lourds: In my playlist:

The Sundays - Through The Dark
Cocteau Twins – Lazy Calm
The Cardigans – Cloudy Sky
The Railway Children – Another Town

Overtune: What inspires you to write songs?

Lourds: Experience, frustrations, admirations and nothingness.

Most of the songs were written by me and some melodies were contributed by Carl, my brother (bassist). Wally (guitarist) and Pao (drummer) finishes the songs with their creative ideas and artistic suggestions.

Overtune: What bands were you listening to growing up that influenced your sound as a band?

Lourds: Me and my brother grew up listening to Sesame Streets and Batibot songs. Hehe.. When I was in college, Sugar Hiccup has become influential in my music life. It was in the 90s I started listening to them. I was petrified by Melody Del Mundo’s voice and their music in its entirety. My brother on the other hand enjoyed listening to alternative music when he was in college and then eventually like indie and new wave.

Overtune: What’s your memorable quote for the day?

Lourds: “Operator, give me the number to nine-one-one” – Homer Simpsons. Sorry, I just can’t get it out of my head.

Overtune: Hehe, Pirates or ninjas? :D

Lourds: Pirates

Overtune: Any future releases? or gigs?

Lourds: Future release? I don’t know yet. We still hope.
Gigs? We’re taking a month off. Cezeng, our drummer will undergo surgery and I, on the other hand am going to have my voice/throat check.

Interview with Ryan of Apple Orchard

Apple Orchard is originally based in Manila, Philippines but now in California. The band consists of brothers Ryan and Dale Marquez. They also played together in Dorian of Juniper Bells, which we also included in our compilation. They also have other bands, Ryan on Sodajerk and Carnival Park, while Dale on Sonnet LVIII and Soft Pillow Kisses. The Marquez brothers are talented musicians, created their tunes in their bedroom, with pop songs of love, love letters and summertime.

I met Ryan few years ago in Myspace, and gave me a mix cd together with a copy of their Apple Orchard album. I’ve been keeping in touch with him once a while, but I actually missed a couple of gigs when they came back here in the Philippines. Errr. My sched was pretty tied up at the time.

Here’s a short interview so we can get to know him up close and personal. Hehe.

S: How are you?

Ryan: I'm doing good. Tired most of the time though :-)

S: What are 5 records that had been influencing you until now?

Ryan: That's tough..here's what I came up with:

S: What made you decide to get into music?

Ryan: I was 15 years old, I got into The Beatles and figured out how to play their songs. But i think it was when I discovered Teenage Fanclub that changed my life...er...musically. It was the first time I felt I wanted to be in a band.

S: Whats something your friends tease u about?

Ryan: That I looked like someone famous.

S: Wohow. What would u say the bravest thing you’ve done in your entire life?

Ryan: I once pretended to be Batman..i thought that was brave!

S: Haha, Do you have any memorable embarrassing experience?:D

Ryan: During a field trip in College, got so wasted, barfed in a bus, smelled like shit for the entire trip back to Manila.

S: Awww, thats one heck of an experience. :D
Anyway, how about Apple Orchard's future releases?

Ryan: Oh yes, the Apple Orchard CD is almost done! 2 more months maybe?

bedroom-pop Camera Shy

Camera Shy is a Filipino bedroom-pop band from San Ramon, California ages from 12-17. The band consists of Kyle Lim, Kevin and Kimo Francisco. They are described as “high-school love affair with a grown-up disguise”. Camera Shy is under Best Kept Secret Tape label.

Thanks to these sweet teenagers for letting us interviewed them and being part of this compilation.

S: What made you decide to get into music, start a band Camera shy?

Kevin: Well, the main reason/s I wanted to start a band was... Listening to Belle & Sebastian and The Lucksmiths. I fell in love with their music and slowly got into alot of indiepop acts. After hearing my cousin's band, I got even more inspired. So I guess that's why!

Kimo: The music that Apple Orchard showed us inspired me to learn how to play and make a band.

Kyle: Listening to Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura, The Lucksmiths, and Apple Orchard deeply inspired me to make music with Camera Shy. I’ve always dreamt of writing and creating songs, but lacking the instruments and talent at the time, I never thought I would ever go for it. It wasn’t until hearing such beautiful songs that I felt the desperation to learn how to play the guitar and write. As 2 years went by and as we have been influenced by other great bands, I am becoming inspired by our own songs, seeing how far we’ve grown.

S: Who wrote most of the lyrics?

Kevin: We all write ALOT actually. I think each of us has written 50 songs. hehe. But the recorded ones are mostly me and Kyle, but Kimo has written some of our best songs.

Kimo: It's pretty mixed around, but I think my brother and Kyle has written alot of the songs recorded so far, but I've written a bunch... and so have they.

Kyle: Everyone in the group loves to write songs, so we get different ideas from either of the three corners of the band. So far, the songs that we have recorded are mostly written by me and Kevin, but Kimo is starting to write more and they sound great!

S: Here’s something I’d also like to know about you guys. What would u say the bravest thing you’ve done in your entire life?

Kevin: Hmm. Nothing really. I guess asking Lupe Fernandez for a picture. Well, I didn't really ask. I don't know!

Kimo: Yeah what he said!

Kyle: Umm…looked at myself in the mirror, hah. After that, I found the courage to face anything in the world (just kidding) :D

S: What’s the most embarrassing experience that ever happened to u guys?

Kyle: Ah…so many embarrassing memories…yet, I can’t think of any. Sorry.

Kevin: The most embarrassing thing for us as a band? I think it was our little Halloween party. It definitely didn't work out as planned.

Kimo: I'm not sure. I'm sure there are many embarrassing moments that I can't think of right now.

S: Any future releases of Camera Shy?

Kevin: Future Releases? Yes! We're going to have a split release with The Paper Orchestra and Ideal Free Distribution through Pacific Nature Recordings. Also we're going to be in two Compilations with Pop Song Romance. and one through Pacific Nature again, called 'Young Folks: Music of DIY Teens'. All coming soon! We're also working on our first Full Length, so keep an eye out for that too!
